The First Saturdays Devotion is a Marian reparation practice rooted in the Fatima apparitions of 1917 and the subsequent revelation to Sister Lúcia at Pontevedra, Spain, in 1925. In the Fatima apparitions, Mary asked for the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart and for the practice of reparational Communion on the First Saturdays of five consecutive months. The specific request was given to Lúcia in her later visions: on the First Saturday of each of five consecutive months, the faithful would (1) go to Confession (within eight days before or after), (2) receive Holy Communion, (3) pray five decades of the Rosary, and (4) spend fifteen minutes meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary — all offered in reparation for the five principal offenses against Mary's Immaculate Heart (blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception, against her perpetual virginity, against her divine maternity, against her role in salvation history, and offenses given by those who publicly profane her sacred images). Christ told Lúcia that those who fulfilled these five First Saturdays with this disposition would receive the grace of final perseverance — assistance at the hour of death in all that is necessary for salvation. The devotion was widely promoted by Pope St. Pius XII, Pope St. John Paul II (who attributed his survival of the 1981 assassination attempt in part to Marian reparation), and the Fatima apostolate. It is currently practiced by Catholic communities worldwide. The First Saturdays devotion is appropriate for: any Catholic seeking a sustained Marian reparational practice; preparation for death (one's own or a loved one's) — the grace of final perseverance is the central promise; reparation for serious public sins of one's family or community; and as a five-month spiritual exercise pairing well with Lent / Easter preparation or any major life-transition season.

The full devotion requires five consecutive First Saturdays. Each First Saturday, four conditions must be fulfilled in the spirit of reparation for the five principal offenses against Mary's Immaculate Heart: (1) Sacramental Confession within eight days before or after the First Saturday — the same confession does not need to be made specifically on the day; (2) Holy Communion received on the First Saturday Mass; (3) Five decades of the Rosary (the standard Marian Rosary; any of the four sets of mysteries is acceptable, but the devotional tradition pairs the Rosary mystery with the First Saturday meditation in step 4); (4) Fifteen minutes of meditation on one or more of the mysteries of the Rosary — this is in addition to the Rosary itself, structured as silent contemplation. The devotion can be started in any month; the five-month commitment is the structural requirement. Many Catholic families do the First Saturdays as a family practice, with parents and children attending Mass together and praying the Rosary together at home. Many parishes offer a First Saturday Mass with extended adoration and Marian devotional resources. The devotion is especially appropriate for: any season requiring sustained Marian devotion; preparation for one's own death or for the death of a loved one (the grace of final perseverance is the central promise); reparation for the sins of one's family; and as a long-arc spiritual practice that creates rhythm across the year (twelve months = two complete five-month cycles plus two months for catch-up or rest).
Most holy Virgin Mary, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, I offer you this First Saturday in reparation for the offenses committed against your Immaculate Heart, particularly those of which I have been guilty, in my own thoughts, words, and deeds, or by my failure to speak up when others have offended you. I commit myself this day to: Confession within eight days, Holy Communion received with devotion, the five decades of the Rosary prayed with attention, and fifteen minutes of meditation on the mysteries. Receive these offerings as a small return on the immense love of your Immaculate Heart for me and for the world. Grant me, through your maternal intercession, the grace of final perseverance — that at the hour of my death I may have received all that is necessary for the salvation of my soul. Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
